Dark Souls II was revealed last night at the Spike Video Game Awards with the world premiere of its trailer being unveiled to an unsuspecting public. The exercise in tourtur... er, video game was announced by Namco Bandai for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, with no release date yet to be confirmed.
The game is set to feature "a new hero, a new storyline, and an unfamiliar world for players to survive in". Based on the reveal trailer, it's looking like the game will be a lot more heavily story-driven than its previous iteration.
FromSoftware Director Tomohiro Shibuya promises that, "the entire development team is striving to make Dark Souls II an experience that is fresh while not forsaking its roots in presenting players with challenging gameplay." The game is also set to feature a revamped server based multiplayer experience that will "put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing and sharing with others".
Edge Online Magazine hinted that their upcoming December 20 edition will feature the game as their cover title, but early teases at an interview with Shibuya suggest the game will be "more straightforward and more understandable". Some avid fans have already started taking this as a sign that the series will see its "commercialization" and "dumbing down", but quite honestly until we see some gameplay, it's all irrelevant chatter. And honestly, if Namco can bring the series to a greater audience and not have me sound like a twerp everytime I bring up an obscure title, I can deal with that too!
